Changing Skype video snapshot folder

How often haven’t you been irritated because different software save their data to different folders? Skype is no exception. When you make video snapshots, they are saved to a hidden folder. Making most imaging software, among them Picasa, read the folder is then not possible.

SkypeWhen you make video snapshots with Skype on Windows, the pictures are saved in png format to a hidden folder:
Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\user name\Application Data\Skype\Pictures
Windows Vista and Windows 7: C:\Users\user name\AppData\Roaming\Skype\Pictures

To change this you need to change a setting in registry. Please note that if you do something wrong in the registry, you can make your Windows installation unusable.

In Windows XP you change this folder the following way:

  • Shut down Skype completely (right click on the Skype icon in the tray in the lower right corner and close the application).
  • Open the configuration file located at C:\Documents and Settings\WINDOWS_USERNAME\AppData\Skype\SKYPE_USERNAME\
  • Edit/open the file config.xml
  • Look for <AvatarPath>, and change the path shown there to the path you want the pictures to be saved in.
  • Save the changes and restart Skype.
  • Hint for Picasa
If you want Picasa to read the pictures saved by Skype, you need to tell it to include picture format png. Go to the menu Tools, alternatives, choose filtypes and check for “.PNG”.
